8 Iconic Disney Characters With Glasses

The Walt Disney Studios universe is chock full of iconic cartoon characters, princes and princesses, style icons, and underdogs.

Some of these well-loved, legendary characters also wear equally legendary glasses. If you’re a glasses-wearer looking for some style inspo or curious to see which Disney legends are rocking glasses, too, you’re in the right place.

1. Carl Fredricksen (Up)

Voiced by the legendary Ed Asner, Carl from Up is a loveable character whose heart slowly opens as he brings some adventure back into his life.

Carl wears thick-rimmed square glasses in the classic “old man” style many of our grandparents have rocked over the years. If you want Carl’s look, we recommend some black frames that are durable enough to hold up on a trek to Paradise Falls.

We don’t just love Carl’s glasses, though. Carl is also one of the many Disney characters that always brings us to tears — the montage at the beginning of Up (if you know, you know) is one of the most moving scenes in Disney history, and it gets us every time.

Watching Carl turn from a grumpy elderly man into a tried-and-true adventurer inspires us to step outside of our own comfort zones and try something new — even if it’s just a new pair of glasses.

2. Edna Mode (The Incredibles)

Edna is eccentric, confident, and ready to transform the world of superhero fashion. She’s very against capes, but she is a fan of big, bold glasses. Her oversized round glasses pair perfectly with her bangs and permanent pout.

While Edna might not be the main character in The Incredibles, she definitely left a mark on us when we first saw the movie.

If you watched The Incredibles for the first time as a kid, you might’ve been confused by her appearance. Now, though, she’s one of the most memorable characters — both in the movie and in Disney or Pixar’s roster as a whole — because of her unique look.

3. Honey Lemon (Big Hero 6)

Voiced by Genesis Rodriguez, Honey Lemon is a bubbly, extroverted, and intelligent part of the Big Hero 6 crew. She’s always supportive of her best friends and is seen wearing oversized round glasses (similar to Edna’s, but with a very different effect) throughout the movie. Her look falls somewhere on the spectrum between nerd scientist, ‘70s flower child, and stylish modern E-girl — and we’re loving it.

Honey is a style inspiration to glasses-wearers everywhere. Her outfits are fun, vibrant, and a bit all over the place. She’s an inspiring female character who brightens every scene she’s in

4. Milo Thatch (Atlantis: The Lost Empire)

Milo James Thatch, voiced by Michael J. Fox, is arguably one of the most unforgettable Disney characters from the early 2000s — and his look is part of what makes him so memorable. His round, wire-framed glasses fit his intellectualism, but they’re super stylish.

Some say Milo looks a bit like a modern Indiana Jones — a blend of rugged adventurer with charming professor.

Along with Jim Hawkins from Treasure Planet, Milo was an early crush for countless Disney fans because of his appearance. That should serve as a source of inspo for any man who wears glasses — wear them confidently, and they just might make you look more interesting than ever. Don’t be afraid to go for a more nerdy, intellectual look. Milo rocked it, and so can you.

5. Indiana Jones (Indiana Jones)

Indiana Jones started out as a LucasFilm character —he came from the mind of Star Wars creator George Lucas. However, Disney acquired LucasFilm in 2012, making Indy officially part of the Disney family.

Played by Harrison Ford in the five main movies in the series (Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Temple of Doom, The Last Crusade, The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, and The Dial of Destiny), Indy almost always wears glasses when he’s teaching college archaeology.

Like Milo Thatch, Indy sports wire-framed round glasses that were fashionable in the ‘30s and ‘40s — but these frames are still trending today, and they’ll give you a bookish look that adds some depth to your style.

6. Sadness (Inside Out)

Sadness is one of the main character Riley’s five emotions, along with Joy, Disgust, Anger, and Fear.

Sadness wears an oversized off-white turtleneck and huge black glasses, giving her a completely different look from the rest of the emotions in Riley’s head. And if it intimidates you to take inspiration from a character named “Sadness”, rest assured — there’s a reason she’s so iconic.

This character makes a great addition to your mood board if you want your look to be equal parts cozy, approachable, and nerdy. Plus, Sadness pairs her glasses with adorable blue hair (and blue skin), so consider dying your hair if you really want to lean into this look. (We don’t recommend dying your skin, though).

7. Gyro Gearloose (DuckTales)

Gyro was introduced way back in the ‘50s through Disney’s comic books and is equal parts eccentric genius inventor and goofy comic relief.

Gyro doesn’t have the best social skills, and he’s sometimes a bit arrogant, but we love him just the same. His best qualities are his endless creativity and his pride in his work. His creations over the years include the Gizmoduck Suit and Lil Bulb, two inventions that play a crucial role in the ducks’ adventures.

Gyro has worn different pairs of glasses in the various iterations of DuckTales, and they’re always a major part of his look.

As a kid, Gyro’s frames were oversized —much larger than his eyes and taking up a significant chunk of real estate on his face. When depicted as a young adult, he did a 180 and wore a pair of tiny round specs perched atop his beak. As an adult, he went for the classic horn-rimmed look — and that’s what we think suits him best.

8. Professor Ludwig Von Drake (DuckTales and More)

Professor Von Drake is Donald Duck’s uncle, and like Gyro, he works as a scientist, psychologist, and color expert.

Ludwig hails from Austria, and it seems that he was loosely inspired by another Austrian psychologist who definitely wasn’t a duck: Sigmund Freud.

Von Drake has always been depicted wearing a little pair of glasses that perch on his bright orange bill. Early on, he wore a green coat, sky blue sweater, and a vibrant red bowtie for a colorful look that was toned down over the years. Von Drake is a fantastic source of style inspiration if you want to lean into a more retro color scheme.

9. Honorable Mentions

While those are our personal favorites, the Disney family only grows with each new film. Didn’t see your Disney-style icon on our list? Don’t worry, we haven’t forgotten them.

For younger Disney fans, Mirabel Madrigal from Encanto is adored for her spunky personality, her dedication to her family, and her round, green glasses.

Another Disney film, Pixar’s Turning Red, featured multiple glasses-wearing favorites, from the lovable main character Mei Lei to her stoic friend Priya. And who could forget Chicken Little?

There are even more options for classic Disney fans. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is an iconic Disney princess flick, and the dwarves' leader, Doc, has eyeglasses that every grandpa should aspire to — as does Geppetto in the original Pinocchio. There are also fun frames in Peter Pan, from the heroic John Darling to the sniveling Smee.

In truth, there are loads of iconic, glasses-wearing Disney characters, and no doubt plenty more in the movies to come.
