Light carries information about the objects around us to our eye. Because polarized lenses filter light there can be some minor disadvantages to wearing polarized sunglasses:
Due to liquid crystal displays (LCDs) use polarizing films in their construction, polarized lenses can make it difficult to view displays that use this technology.
Due to the wavelengths of light that constitute various colors are not equally polarized when reflected, sometimes color can be distorted and the eyes may perceive a 3d effect on certain surfaces.
In certain driving situations where ice or water is on the road, glare can actually be a helpful signal. Reducing the glare by using polarized lenses may actually increase the hazard in these situations.
How do sunglasses provide eye protection?
Sunglasses provide eye protection by reducing the intensity of the light impacting the retina. Mechanisms within the structure of the eye can become fatigued when having to adjust to high intensity light. The most important function of any pair of glasses is to prevent ultraviolet (UV) light from entering the eye. How to tell if sunglasses are polarized?
Testing sunglasses for polarization can be easily done with one of these methods:
1.
Hold your sunglasses in front of another pair of sunglasses or an LCD screen, like a computer or smartphone. Rotate one pair at a 90-degree angle. If the lenses are polarized, you'll notice a significant reduction or complete blockage of light passing through them.
2.
Find a reflective surface like water, glass, or a car hood. Put on the sunglasses and tilt your head slightly while looking at the reflection. Polarized lenses should reduce glare significantly or even eliminate it, whereas non-polarized lenses won't have much effect on glare reduction.
